Instead, its power comes from the sheer number of different restaurants in the city. It’s certainly not a city with a low cost of living. New York City, on the other hand, is a little different. Portland is a great gluten free city because it’s more affordable than bigger cities like Seattle and San Francisco, which means more room to test new things that wouldn’t be possible in a higher cost of living area. When people ask me what my favorite gluten free travel destinations in the United States are, New York City is always near the top of the list, roughly tied with Portland, Oregon, as the most Celiac-friendly city in the United States.
